<p>A group of children move from their native London to the wild Kent countryside. While playing in an old gravel pit, they discover a strange creature known as a Psammead or sand fairy, who grants them one wish per day. The ensuing adventures--frequently hilarious, sometimes dangerous, and always exciting--teach the children that imagination alone has no limit.</p>
